Our Mission

Steamboat Dance Theatre’s (SDT) mission is to engage, enrich, and educate the communities of Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley through dance and movement. SDT is a community organization that offers multiple programs intended to bring dance and dance culture to local dancers and non-dancers alike. We do this by hosting an annual community dance performance, offering scholarships for dance classes, organizing master classes, organizing low-cost community dance classes, and exhibiting free dance films.

 

Steamboat Dance Theatre Executive Director Job Description

SDT is seeking a part-time Executive Director (ED) who will successfully lead the organization in fundraising, program implementation and growth, and community outreach.  The Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for SDT’s programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.  The Executive Directive reports to the Board of Directors. All members of staff and volunteers report directly or indirectly to the ED.

 

Responsibilities

 

Leadership & Management:

  • Lead the organization and ensure its overall health and sustainability through the implementation of its strategic plan, overseeing its financial security, and maintaining adequate capacity.
  • In coordination with the Board, ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
  • Actively engage and energize SDT volunteers, board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders.
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; serve as ex-officio of committees as needed; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction of the organization, participate in Board meetings.
  • Build and ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.

Fundraising & Communications:

  • Execute and expand fundraising activities to include grant-writing and reporting, building donor relationships, and identifying other revenue generating opportunities as appropriate.
  • Establish and build-up improved systems for fundraising and financials management.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to community relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand and improving community relations with local studios, dancers, businesses, and arts non-profits.
  • Cultivate relationships with local media; provide oversight for SDT’s presence in the community.
  • Build relationships with foundations and philanthropic organizations.

Programs and Studio Management:

  • Oversee the successful management of dance studio business, to include booking the studio, overseeing financials, promoting classes, developing programs around studio use, and carrying out community outreach.
  • Identify and build partnerships with local businesses and non-profits where appropriate to augment program implementation and grow fundraising activities.

Qualifications

The ED will be thoroughly committed to SDT’s mission and will serve as a spokesperson for the organization. All candidates should have proven leadership, fundraising, and relationship management experience.

Specific requirements include:

  • Master’s Degree and three years relevant experience or Bachelor’s Degree and five years of relevant experience; track record of effectively leading a performance- and outcomes-based organization; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth.
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and carry out implementation of SDT’s strategic plan and vision for the organization.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to manage and coach staff, volunteers and board and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people and independently.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
  • Knowledge of dance and art programming and familiarity with the Yampa Valley community.
  • Excellent public communication and presentation skills, as well as conflict resolution and interpersonal skills,
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Excel required, Adobe Creative Suite and other software knowledge a plus.
